- The song of Zechariah climaxes with the prediction that the coming Messiah, whose way would be prepared by his son, John the Baptist, would “guide our feet into the path of peace.” Do you see how this song is linked to Old Testament prophecies that described the “Prince of Peace”?
- Compare Mary’s song (Luke 1:46-55) with Hannah’s (I Samuel 2:1-10). What parallels do you see? What’s the significance of these predictions and what do they tell us about Jesus and his mission on earth?
- Had you ever noticed before, during the reading of the Christmas story, that the angels highlight the gift of peace on earth that this baby would bring? Of all the things that the angels could have said, the promised shalom was their message! When you understand the full meaning of this word shalom, doesn’t it enrich the biblical story? How would you describe the substance of the angels’ announcement?
- What differences do you see between the prophecies of John the Baptist and the ministry of Jesus? Can you see why John the Baptist had some doubts about Jesus? Do you have doubts as well?
- How would you summarize Jesus’ “Manifesto”? If this was his statement of purpose, is this also a “manifesto” in your life as a follower of Jesus?
